Mom always knows best

One of my favorite things that my mother taught me is something she didn’t even know she was teaching me, it’s something so simple, something she did everyday without fail.

Everyday my Dad would get home from work around 4:30. And everyday at 4:00 my mom would break away from what she was doing, whether she was in the middle of doing school with us, or making dinner. She would sneak away to her bedroom, and there she would fix her hair, freshen up her makeup, and spray herself with perfume. I would sit there and I would watch her, thinking she was the most beautiful woman in the world. And I would ask her what she was doing, and she would say “Well your Dad is coming home, and I want to look pretty for him, so I am freshening up.” That was her answer, so simple, but so important. That is what she did everyday. And everyday when my Dad would get home, after all of us kids would run to him and bombard him with hugs, he would walk over to my mom and wrap his arms around her and kiss her. These are some of my favorite memories, and some of my favorite pictures of marriage.

I’m not saying I do this everyday or that this is the recipe for a happy marriage. And even though Casey has seen me at my worst, and there are many days when he comes home and I am in my Uggs and sweats with no makeup on, he still comes over and gives me a kiss. But there are those days when I do freshen up, and I spray perfume on my neck right before he gets home, and I feel pretty. And I think about my Mom doing the same. She simply wanted to be beautiful for my Dad, and to this day she is, and to this day they are still the love of each others lives.
